Qhubeka was started by Axiz in 2005 as a registered Section 21 not for gain organisation to create a means of providing much needed socio-economc development (SED) support to SA's disadvantaged communities.
Qhubeka's aim is to provide children in rural areas with reliable, affordable bicycles appropriate to conditions in their regions to enable them to get to schools faster with less effort and so be better able to absorb lessons that will ultimately help them progress in their quest for learning.
In rural areas the lack of sustainable self-employment and job opportunities means that poverty is wide-spread and deeply entrenched. Generally, the men move to the cities to find employment, leaving women, children and the elderly to fend for themselves. Qhubeka sources and supplies "tools" that could enable socio-economic development in South Africa's poorest communities. It partners with SED organisations that have a proven track record in poverty alleviation in the impoverished regions of South Africa.
The word "Qhubeka" is an Nguni or Zulu word meaning "to carry on", "to continue", "to progress" or "to move forward".
